Chiropractic & Disc Herniations?
I’ve spoken to a lot of patients in our Newark chiropractic office who have a history of disc herniation or disc bulges that had never initially considered chiropractic as a treatment option for improving the health of the disc as well as the associated symptoms of pain, stiffness, loss of function, numbness/tingling, etc. Their rationale for not thinking of a chiropractor for these conditions was usually the same, “I just didn’t know that you worked on that sort of problem”, or “nobody ever told me”.
As doctors of the spine, disc herniations and disc bulges fall right within our wheelhouse for the types of conditions that we work to improve. In fact, I would estimate that nearly 80% of our current patient population is dealing with some level of disc damage, either through traumatic or degenerative means. In addition to our clinical experience, the research that’s out there proves that chiropractic is not only an effective option of improving disc issues, but it’s actually one of the best.
A study in the Journal of Manipulative & Physiological Therapeutics used MRI’s to evaluate patients that had cervical (neck) and lumbar (low back) disc herniations who were undergoing chiropractic care. The results were astounding. About 80% of the patients studied had great outcomes with significant reductions of pain and abnormal clinical exam findings. 63% of the patients studied had a reduction in size or a complete resorption of the herniated disc as well! Additionally, 78% of the patient’s studied were able to return to their work following treatment.
So what does this mean for you?
